The third installment of TJB is up and running in the present at Bristol's very own moochers paradise - the HERE Gallery. The opening night was a mighty pleasant affair, so much mellower than London. Bristol's a super Rad city! thanks to all who came out for the opening, special thanks go to Ben O' Leary for being so on it, taking care of all the promotional guff, accommodating our every request, and for generally being mellow. We wanted to arrange the work in a different order to the two previous shows. As always the space dictated what we could and could not do, but we kept it as organic as possible. Hanging the work was relatively painless, numbering the show was an absolute nad ache.

Rob Darch Graduated from UWCN, Newport in 2004 with a degree in Documentary Photography. Although aesthetically his work falls within the contemporary documentary practice, the themes behind the work are more poetic and conceptual in their nature. Creatively he is fascinated by the minutia of everyday life and achieving a sense of place in his work. He has had several solo and group exhibitions in the UK, and now after a long period of ill health is hoping to start working on some extended project ideas. More recently he has been exploring video and film which has led to delusions of grandeur. His perfectionism leads to procrastination which leads to frustration which leads to self analysis which leads to frustration. He loves nature, and is at his happiest when chewing on grass, or resting by a brook.

Hello I'm Jon

I tend to leave most things till the last minute and often do things the hard way, I fail a lot and am well versed in the art of procrastination and underachievement.

I have done lots of different jobs for money while always struggling to find time for my artwork - I work as a carer at present.

I love drawing and imagining stuff - It feels like it's what I'm supposed to be doing, it's a habit I don't want to stop - I would draw all the time if only I had time.

My process is usually a bit like this though subject to change
- drawing with pencil + rubber on bristol board until it feels OK
- inking up is mostly done with fine tip pens and or brush + ink
- scan in to computer - crank up contrast if needed
- open in photoshop - remove white so now lines are on top layer
then just build up the colours underneath my lines layer by layer

That said I'm really enjoying messing about with coloured pens, pencils, paint and stuff at the moment - getting back to a more instinctive way of image making

My inspiration comes from everywhere - life, nature, people, dreams etc.. I love looking at other peoples artwork on the Internet, watching films, reading comics, going for walks n stuff.

NEW ARTIST - ADAM HIGTON

ADAM HIGTON graduated with BA hons Fine Art from UWE, bristol 2008, since then, he has started his own mystical woodland saga which combines drawing, video, costumes, music, textiles and performances pieces (mainly focusing on drawing...) titled 'Yule Bringer'. Adam also recently formed the Jovial Woods Artist Book Collection, with the intention of hosting one night events, in small local environments (village halls, libraries, bookshops etc...) exhibiting a special collection of limited edition artists books from artists/illustrators and musicians.

In December 2008 he had his first solo exhibition at Detroit Gallery an artist run space in Stockholm, Sweden. Adam's 2nd solo show will open at Here Gallery in September, and following on from this will be a 16 page Christmas special for the Running Amok artist book project, published by ANALOGUE BOOKS

Adam's work is based around themes of merriment and mysticism, a love of drawing and the works are mainly inspired from his own personal spiritual experiences, which are adapted, changed and re-told through the creation of woodland characters. Adam's interested in animistic folk religions (mainly pagan and japanese shinto... but he's also keen on Norse mythology and icelandic saga's... like Theodor Kittelsen, Ladislaw Starewicz, Aubrey Beardsley, Tove Jansson etc. He enjoy's films which combine cartoon animation and real action, in particular Maria Mirabella & Bedknobs and Broomsticks... and drawing whilst listening 60s and 70s folk, prog and rock music...

Hello...Analogue bode a fond farewell to TJB over the weekend. We will be traveling to the HERE Gallery in Bristol next, for the months of July & August. We're excited about this. Works that have sold will be replaced with newbies. We have also invited three new artists to exhibit in the third installment. All will be revealed in good time.

Yes siree, it's up! after an epic journey, which began in the South of England and ended in the North, clocking in at just over 17 hours traveling, and a further 7 hours of nail banging, poscaing, scissoring and threading.

We just missed Mr Peake, who'd been lecturing in Edinburgh for a few days, he had to fly back to Northern Ireland a few hours prior to our arrival. He did stealthily leave us a wee message on masking tape wishing us luck! Much obliged Nigel.

The joyful Bewilderment opened to a truly humbling turn out once again. You can see more memory capturing on Analogues Flickr and Club Mumble.

Michael Kirkham and Rue Five braved the cold and attended the opening on their todds, which was greatly appreciated. Pleasure to make your acquaintance chaps!

The above would not have been realised without the following righteous rippers - Log, Lee, Stef, and of course our sterling hosts Russell and Julie. Take a bow guys.

Russell and Julie, who both work tirelessly to promote a plethora of interesting, independent Artists have very kindly accommodated us, at very short notice. Offering to host the private view on a Saturday as opposed to their established Thursday slot "PAIR OF RIPPERS". We had a ridiculous turn out for the show. Reaching full venue capacity by 7.45pm we were informed that no one else could slip through the doors until someone else left. We are delighted to have these up and coming earjoy makers providing the background bangins for The joyful Bewilderment Exhibitions opening night, this here's why...

From the deepest depths of the industrial heartlands of Middle England comes a small ray of light. Since late 2003 a warm glow has steadily grown into what can only be described as a fireball. From this point on let this gentle fireball be known as Einstellung.

EINSTELLUNG: a personal choice - to perceive the world through ones own eyes...Power, beauty, noise, melody, hypnosis, simplicity. Blending glorious monotonous Krautrock with melodic tones and heavy slabs of Sabbath riffage, whilst finding time to declare sonic warfare on those tinnitus victims who have passed the point of no return.

In its early years, Einstellung acted as an outlet for its four members from the day to day trawl of 9 to 5 living. A mutual appreciation of all things warm, loud and hypnotic initially lead to a 28-minute piece entitled Sleep Easy Mr Parker. The result was far too pleasing to be ignored and with a new found momentum the band moved from what was an idyllic escape, to a full steam locomotion assault. The first album, Wings of Desire is now available on Chatterbox Records. The second, as yet untitled album is part way through the writing stage.

First and foremost Einstellung enjoy each others company and through this have managed to accidentally create a little bit of sound. This little bit of sound has in turn spread and the warm glow is now seeping out of the derelict factorys of Birmingham and settling nicely in the ears of the believers. Word has spread quickly and labels and promoters from the UK, the USA and Australia have made contact with Einstellung. An encouraging sign considering every contact has been through word of mouth.

JASON is from Adelaide, South Australia (a David Lynch-like town famous for it’s churches and weird murders).He began working life as a kitchen hand in Chief Charley’s $5-all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant. Tired of fat burns, he went looking for a cushier job and wound up writing commercials at an ad agency. It kicked off a 20 year career that’s seen him work with some of the best agencies in the world, for all sorts of clients. His most infamous invention remains the Pepperami ‘It’s a bit of an animal’ campaign. These days you’ll find him at Wolff Olins London where he’s a Creative Director. Between adverts, Jason has directed a pop video, made sympathy cards for victims of crime and held an exhibition celebrating the superhero toys of his childhood. Currently he’s collaborating on an ongoing ART PROJECT with the photographer Valerie Phillips and trying to paint.

Anyway, what gets me up in the morning..? well, I guess ...I like trying to make pictures of things that no one could have possibly seen before. I'm not massively into drawing from observation. Why say 'this is a picture of my dinner', when you can say 'this is a picture of a headless lady surrounded by luminous ghosts preparing a banquet of edible pants'. Let's here it for VALERIE!... "I just try to keep everything I do, whether it's client work or personal stuff, as close to one another as possible. That way people or companies I work for know that it's Valerie Phillips' work." Erasing the boundary between commercial work and fine art photography is one of the reasons she is so prolific at both. She has self published four books to date, and has had another recently published titled I CAN'T BELIEVE A GIRL IS PLAYING ME METALLICA. She also runs an art project disguised as a skateboard outfit called CHERRYVALE SKATEBOARD COMPANY with her sterling partner JASON GORMLEY

Part of what makes her work so appealing to fashion clients is that she's not overly concerned with fashion or the trappings of being an in demand photographer. "I'm only interested in the pictures. Lighting, stylists, hair, make up and all the rest are integral to a shoot but I try to let them do their thing so I can concentrate on capturing the image in front of me." This laser-sighting allows her to focus on seeing those authentic moments that define her surprising, supremely natural images.

Beyond photography, Valerie loves horses and the moon and outer space pursuits and making books. When she's shooting she's usually armed with a Leica Minilux point and click camera or a digital Hasselblad. She makes her bed in New York and London but can't wait for any time she can spend in Hong Kong or Kansas. She's our kind of strong woman... inspiring us with the passion she brings to her work, her sharp eye, and her determination to do it her way.

TOBY SHUALL is a self taught practitioner, haunted by the woods of Pinner near his folks house where he grew up, and the 'Lostalots' that inhabit this ever increasingly sparse naturalistic realm. From his home in London Toby runs SUBURBAN BLISS which began in his parents home, but was conceived in Northern California. The company itself is inspired by nature, music, art, friendship, love, dreams and independence from the ever increasingly controlled world that we inhabit. The main aim of the label is to put out new imagery on to clothing and other stuff. Largely featuring Toby's work and others like NICOLA PECORARO, FERGADELIC, JETHRO HAYNES, NIK TAYLOR and SIMON PEPLOW. The images and themes are ever evolving as is the company itself.

SIMON PEPLOW lives within a delicately constructed vortex. He spends the majority of his days downloading information from a tiny cabin situated inside the Corpus Callosum region of his noggin. Characters are a fundamental part of his work, described by some as whimsical, cute and sinister in equal measures. He just wishes they were his friends. Simon co-founded the OUTCROWD COLLECTIVE after graduating from the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design in 2004, and continues to work as a freelance illustrator in the real realm.

STEVEN is a Graphic Designer and Illustrator living in South Pasadena. He studied Art at the Art Center in Pasadena, where he met Justin Krietemyer - with whom he started the design firm National Forest.

Beyond visual interests, Steven enjoys creating objects that other human beings can relate to- not quite nostalgic, but closer to a personal photograph or memory. "I've always felt a stronger connection to tangible, printed objects, so that's what I like to make. Most of the ideas for my personal works are created from past experiences and childhood memories. But I prefer creative freedom in my personal work so the concepts and ideas are different from piece to piece. I feel like my process is very intuitive, so many of the meanings or messages are often revealed after the piece is created. When creating personal works, I like to keep most of my ideas fairly subtle or ambiguous; I think it's important to let the viewer make their own assumptions about messages and meanings within a body of work. Another person's interpretation, according to his or her own experiences, is very interesting and significant to me."

Stevens work is Influenced by images, fashion and graphics discovered in Time Life Encyclopedias from 1965-1972, thrift stores, and The Moody Blues, his art might be termed contextual objectivism. That is, he views each piece he creates as a tangible object that is part and parcel of a larger context; the object helps define the context and the context helps define the object. Whatever feel or meaning the observer takes away from the piece belongs to the observer. Nothing is shoved down his or her throat. Discovery is the key. Some of his most recent projects include a four board series for Burton snowboards, contributions to the French clothing line Sixpack, and a series of silkscreen prints based on the idea of “community.” He has exhibited work in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Montreal, Tokyo, Melbourne, Barcelona and now here in dear old Blighty.

MEDHI HERCBERG is an illustrator, musician, artist and teacher of multimedia graphic design in Paris. His project SHOBOSHOBO originally involved Japanese visual artists and musicians and toured through Japan as an art bus with interactive and collaborative happenings taking place in different places. Shoboshobo is also creating clothes mostly monster full color jumpers and t-shirts. Sarajo works from a studio in Los Angeles that borders Thai Town, Little Armenia and Koreatown, with Guatemalan and Salvadoran bakeries nearby. The cacophony of hand-painted signs in a variety of languages serves as both inspiration and a daily reminder that the ordinary is often extraordinary and nothing is what it seems. A host of disparate vocabularies from the worlds of fine, folk and decorative art, including Persian minatures, Shaker trance drawings, Japanese ukiyo-e, and her Hungarian great aunt's embroidery, can be found wandering through Sarajo's images. Using open ended narratives, folk tales, abstraction and the juxtaposition of discordant images, Sarajo gives form to the human experience as she sees it. Her work has been exhibited in Galleries in Los Angeles, San Diego, North Carolina, Minnesota, New York, Rome, Venice, Naples and Australia.

I was born in Cyprus in 1962. My mother was from Charleville in County Cork in Ireland. My father was from Tipperary Town also in Ireland. They came to England in the 50's. I was born in Cyprus because my dad was in the RAF (Royal Air Force), he was a steward in the Sergeants Mess. I was always interested in drawing as a young boy, when my dad bought a new shirt he would give me the smooth white card inside it, this was a real treat! The best surface ever to draw on. Well... I'm older now, but I'm still doing the same things, drawing and writing, trying to make sense of things. I don't know.

RANDY was raised on the west coast of Canada (British Columbia) with mild bears and non-stop drizzle. High school in a small town taught me to run fast from large 4x4 trucks. After two years of community college, I travelled in Europe for a year with a backpack and a skateboard. That experience forced me to talk in many other languages, even if it was only a few words. I realized I did have a Canadian accent. Once back in North America, I went back to college, on the east coast of Canada (Halifax, Nova Scotia) to get Fine Art degree and a Visual Communications (design) degree. My introduction to California was through an internship at Snowboarder magazine, which led me back for more work with them and then a few other skateboard related companies. Now I'm headed home. Vancouver calls me back. I don't know what to expect other than rain and more time to do art stuff and take pictures and of course hang out with my new wife. I'll be back down in California for a solo art show at Oceanside's Swiv Tackle Circus gallery in Jan of 2009. After that we go back to the drizzel.

Canadian born artist, MICHAEL SWANEY lives and works in Barcelona. He only recently discovered that he is more than one eighth Polish and that his real surname was actually "Swiatkowski". Primarily working with the collage medium, his detailed works of fictional, domestic scenes are meticulously cut and pasted to create uncomfortable yet lighthearted situations and hypothetical performances. Often using old, recycled materials, the delicate collages nudge art history in the ribs. Merijn Hos (1978, Enschede, NL) who is also known under his alias BFREE , is an Artist and Illustrator from Utrecht, the Netherlands. He graduated in 2004 from the Utrecht School of Visual Arts with a B.F.A in Illustration. Justin’s work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide, most recently at The Riviera Gallery in Brooklyn at ‘Fellow Travelers’ with Dan Funderburgh and Kevin Devine. Justin is known internationally for his design work under the moniker DEMO for clients such as Nike, Zoo York, Nickelodeon, and Burton.

JOSH PETHERICK hails from Melbourne, Australia. Born in 1979, Josh spent his youth growing up in the Adelaide hills of South Australia completely infatuated with the natural world (especially the mythological), punk rock and drawing. He recently located to the Netherlands where he currently lives and works. A true original wizard, working across the fields of graphic design, illustration, exhibition, film and musical disciplines. I have devised a system for living. Listen to the groan of my plumbing and the gush of my waterspout. I emerge from my tarpaulin as white as maggot to face the new internet dawn and read the newspapers online. My investment products are growing above the rate of inflation. I'm laying down some supplies for when I'm invalid."

After a period living in The Status Labyrinth, he now lives in quiet seclusion with his elaborate bicycles in the deep countryside of the County of Countryside. To pass the time he makes pictures for anyone who asks. Scrawling pictures of dead and dying dolphins, weeping over empty treasure chests, getting mental treatment for having been an inmate at Her Majesty's Prison Art College and painting portraits of death help to fill the time between sleeps. In the long nights he manipulates electrons on distant hard-drives to bring the joy of websites to the world. There's nothing like a roasted blue-tit for breakfast. He uses Mont Blanc gold fountain pens, a scanner and the iMac Apple PC Dell Dimension Intel Inside-Outside-Upside-Down Celeron Celery Acorn BBC Micro Laptop Desktop Flat Screen Wide Screen Sony Solar Easeltop Mini Organiser Mulberry Blackberry Raspberry iBeret to make his works. It is his last wish to have his ashes scattered in Chapelfield Shopping Centre, Norwich.
